The Transkei Defence Force (TDF) was established in 1981 from the South African Defence Force's (SADF) 141 Battalion. The TDF was the defense force of the Republic of Transkei, a nominally independent bantustan during South Africa's Apartheid era. In 1994, when Transkei was dissolved, the TDF was incorporated into the SADF.
The South African government declared Transkei "independent" in 1976, along with three other homelands: Bophuthatswana, Venda, and Ciskei. These homelands were not recognized by any other country, and limiting African political rights to them was widely opposed. In 1986, South African citizenship was restored to people born outside the four "independent" homelands.
In 1994, the homelands were reabsorbed into South Africa and became part of the new Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
